What the organisation does

Cancer Council NSW supports people in New South Wales who are affected by cancer. The service can answer questions about any aspect of cancer and helps people find support services in their local area. Support includes cancer information, emotional support, legal help and financial support. Practical help is also available, such as accommodation and transport to treatment. Most services are free. If a service has a cost, financial support may be available for people who cannot afford to pay. Some services are available only to people who meet certain criteria.

This service runs phone support groups for adults with certain types of advanced or metastatic cancer (cancer that has spread). Groups are available for myeloma, pancreatic cancer and brain cancer. Financial Navigation Service

Financial Navigation Service offers financial information, guidance and resources. This service is for people affected by cancer, including carers. It is available to anyone in New South Wales who is facing financial hardship because of a cancer diagnosis or caring duties. Financial Navigators can talk through a person’s whole money situation. They can work with the person to find the level and type of support that fits their needs. They also help people understand their financial rights and options.

Transport to Treatment

Transport to Treatment is a free service for people with cancer who can’t use Community Transport Services or have difficulties getting to treatment. Trained volunteer drivers take people to treatment appointments in Cancer Council NSW vehicles. This service is available in regional, rural and remote New South Wales. A referral from a health professional is required, and the service will assess eligibility.

The Financial Assistance Service supports people with cancer and their carers. The service provides short‑term financial help of up to $350. This support can help with everyday costs such as food, fuel, utility bills or community transport. The service is available only to people who meet certain criteria. Assistance may be given as vouchers or by paying expenses directly. Help is available in all areas of New South Wales. A referral to the Financial Navigation Service is needed first.

This service can help with wills, power of attorney (a legal document to act for someone) and enduring guardian (a legal decision maker for future care) documents for people with cancer. It can also assist with work issues, superannuation and insurance disputes and credit or debt matters related to a cancer diagnosis. Cancer Council Liaisons work with healthcare professionals in hospitals across New South Wales to support people with cancer and their families at any stage of cancer. Liaisons provide information, short‑term emotional support and connect people with relevant support services. Support is provided on site at selected hospitals and cancer centres, including Albury‑Wodonga, Gosford, Wyong, Prince of Wales, Royal North Shore, Tamworth, Concord, Liverpool, Bankstown, Macarthur, Fairfield, Dubbo, Westmead and Blacktown. Support is available in Cantonese, Arabic and Vietnamese for people receiving care at cancer centres in South Western Sydney.

Members can connect with others to share information and support. The Online Community is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It includes discussion forums where people can share their cancer experiences and connect with others with similar experiences. The Online Community is guided by trained Cancer Council staff.
