What the organisation does

Cancer Council Victoria supports people affected by cancer, including carers, friends and family. Support is available through the Information and Support service. The team can explain what cancer is and what to expect during treatment. They also share tips for managing common side effects and talk through treatment options. Other services include cancer counselling, financial counselling and connection with others who had similar cancer experiences. This service is available across Victoria, no matter where people live.

What the service does
The Financial Counselling Program supports people affected by cancer. It connects people with a financial counsellor for practical advice about managing the cost of cancer. Financial counsellors can provide information and guidance on public and private health care, out-of-pocket costs, government benefits, superannuation, insurance, credit and debt. This service is confidential, independent and free for people living in Victoria. Some conditions apply.

Legal Support Program

Cancer Council Victoria

What the service does
The Legal Support Program provides free legal support for people in Victoria living with advanced cancer. The service is confidential and delivered with participating Victorian law firms. Legal support can include help with basic wills (legal documents that say what happens to a person’s belongings), powers of attorney (choosing someone to make decisions), and appointing a medical treatment decision maker (a person who makes medical choices if someone cannot). The service is for people who cannot afford the cost of advice. The service will assess eligibility and is means tested.

Counselling Service

What the service does
Cancer counselling offers short-term phone counselling for cancer-related concerns. This service is for people affected by cancer, including family members, friends and carers. Counsellors can help with adjusting to life with cancer, stress, coping and sleep problems. They can also help with managing treatment side effects, worry about the future, depression and anxiety. Support is available for loss, relationship issues and sexual concerns. Some conditions apply to use this service.
