What the service does
Office of the Public Advocate Victoria helps protect the rights and wellbeing of adults who may have difficulty making decisions because of disability, mental illness, dementia, brain injury or other conditions. The service provides free information, advice, advocacy and guardianship (legal decision-making support) services. It can support people to understand their rights, plan for future decision-making and access help when they have concerns about safety or wellbeing. The Office of the Public Advocate may also be appointed to make decisions for a person when there is no suitable family member or friend available. Interpreter services are available for people who prefer to speak a language other than English. Services are available across Victoria.
